Notes on flora
We have Japanese knotweed coming up all over our garden from the railway embankment. This is a very bad thing. Basically the only way to get rid of it is to blow it up, ensuring the crater is several metres in diameter. Or it can be managed by spraying with some frightening chemicals.
The main infestation is a sort of ivy/creeper type of thing, that wraps itself around every other plant until everything else dies. At its root, its basically a series of thick green bamboo-like shoots that grow to several metres. I can see it sticking up above the shed as I type.
It's actually seriously quite bad. It's the type of thing that can properly devalue your house if the prospective buyer happens to notice it.
Happily, Network Rail has a policy on "invasive and injurous plants", which is just as well. I need to phone them to come and get rid of it before it enters the house...
