The Shining is still scary, it's official
I watched Stanley Kubrick's The Shining on DVD last night at Emma's request. She said she had a morbid fear of it since seeing it years ago and wanted to watch it again to get it out of her system.
I have to admit I was bloody terrified for large portions of the two-hour running time. You forget about the astonishing, ear-splitting music and the totally disturbing performance from child actor Danny Lloyd as Danny. One thing I did remember was the extensive use of tracking shots, which take you around corners, through doors and into bathrooms with often horrible results.
There was one scene, just at the end, which I swear I've never seen before, and I must have watched the movie two or three times before yesterday. It's right at the end and it involves something Wendy sees just before she legs it from the hotel. I've checked the script, which is available online, and there's no mention of it, so I can only assume it's some kind of sick Kubrickian gag. It's basically a bloke on a bed, with another guy dressed in a warthog suit (I think) kneeling in front of him. What the HELL is that all about?
Later... This was meant as a rhetorical question but thanks to the power of the web I have found the answer on IMDb. And it turns out it's a bear suit, rather than a warthog suit, and it's a nod to the original Stephen King novel.

I was amazed by the clarity of the picture when we last watched it. The textures on the hotel floor are amazing. Mind you, we had just bought our first DVD player, so perhaps it was that more than anything else.
